'WTC proposals: Cast your vote'
MSNBC has a page showing seven proposed designs for the World Trade Center site, at http://www.msnbc.com/news/849103.asp?0cl=cR.
I couldn't bring myself to vote for any of them. The only message they conveyed to me is that architects have big egos.
Maybe the problem is that the question is framed too narrowly. Ask an architect what to do with any site, you get a proposal to build something. Has serious consideration been given to leaving the site empty? That, it seems to me, would be a much more powerful message. Manhattan has no shortage of buildings; the absence of a building on that site would mark it as special and unique.
"Never Forget" written in emptiness. The absence of 3,000 souls expressed by absence.
