A person who is shooting at you, firing explosives, tossing grenades, etc. is a combatant. Don't be deliberately dim. It's irritating.
As for the history of the Palestinians and the right to their "homeland," you can split hairs and count angels on pinheads all day. It's all a phony issue anyway. The Arab objective is the total destruction of Israel, and the Palestinians are their cannon fodder for this purpose. Anything that will result in a side-by-side existence of Israel and a Palestinian state is not acceptable to the Arabs. The Palestinians could have been easily absorbed over the last half century into other nations, instead of ethnically cleansed by Arab nations, treated like crap by the Arabs, and kept isolated in angry ghettos.
During the nearly twenty years Jordan totally controlled the West Bank, and there was not an Israeli "settlement" in sight, Jordan could have created a Palestinian state by signing a piece of paper. But a peaceful conclusion where Israel still exists is not one that they are looking for.
