I'd say we're on the same wavelength for a lot of it, but I have to disagree that any terrorist with half a brain would make an indiscriminate attack on the general population of the US. Terrorist attacks are intended to advance an agenda, and the point I was making is that Al Qaida was sending a message in the September 11th attacks consistent with their stated complaints about American influence in the Middle East. The 9/11 message was entirely consistent with their ideology.

Also, it never pays to underestimate an enemy. Al Qaida may be vicious, but ObL, at least, doesn't seem stupid. An unfocused attack on the American people would be perceived as simply barbarous and pointless, and he wasn't out to discredit his own cause. He wanted to advance it, however despicable the means. Any terrorist attack is an attempt to gain sympathy from somebody, somewhere.
