"But error, or even incompetence (if this is proven to be the case), isn't deliberate lying, is it? And saying it's just as bad as lying doesn't make it lying either. So stop using the word. You're the one who gets all bent out of shape on exact semantics and meanings."
Tom, I think at some point a spade has to be called a spade. Powell and friends said about the WMD: "We know this".
We diddn't, and that is irrefutable based on solid evidence.
The terrorist stuff was really out-the-door. People were able to debunk it using just common web research and publically available knowledge. If you think that level of negligence rises just to the level of a 'mistake', then we are really spinning our wheels here.
They believed, very much so, that WMD and terrorists were in Iraq and they were willing to spin-up rumors from the INC into willful fabrications and trott them before the UN.
A lie really is a lie. I don't care if they didn't "mean to". They lied. No offense, but you sound like the straw-man liberal you hold up: "they didn't mean to!" "They PROMISED they were telling the truth!" "They BELIEVED that it was so, shouldn't that count for something?"
