And even if you had, it would have been a dramatic gesture at a moment of national trauma, with you physically present at the presented, if symbolic, target.

Mr. Bush's statement plays dice with other people's lives for political effect. He throws out a challenge with precious little chance that he himself will be there if an enemy takes him up on it.

If he wants an example of inspirational, uplifting rallying speeches, our national history is full of them. He lives right down the street from the Library of Congress. Maybe he could persuade someone down there to look up a few so he could study them.

Good grief! What's next? "ARE YOU READY TO RUMMMBBLE?????"
