The South began voting Republican with Eisenhower, and the rise in Republican fortunes in the South can be tied to the Democratic Party moving away from the blue collar constituency and into the realm of 60s socialism, with its associated lack of traditional conservative values, as anything else. Compare someone like Hubert Humphrey with someone like Howard Dean.
