Nothing dramatic, I'm afraid...

For some reason I was still asleep, and my friend Gary called me up and told me what had happened. I watched the whole thing on TV pretty much all day.

It is interesting to compare this with what happened with Columbia. I had gone out in the early morning darkness to see the Shuttle pass over California. The sky was overcast...the only night it was overcast for about two weeks.

I went back in and turned on the TV to watch the landing, and knew there was trouble the minute they did not pick the Shuttle up again after the reentry period. When the orbiter did not show up at the landing strip, I knew that was it. The first amateur film of the reentry over Texas, showing burning chunks, confirmed it.

What was different was that this time, the internet was there, and many of the people on this board were online talking about it as it happened.
