re: School Project:What do you remember....

When I arrived at work, one of my co-workers said: "The space shuttle just blew up." I didn't believe her, for a number of reasons: The way she described the problem, her general lack of understanding of and interest in the space program, and most importantly: NASA had billed the STS as safe and routine. I believed them.

As the truth came out, I was crushed with disappointment. When the various ramifications came out (Hubble and Galileo projects put in serious jeopardy, LDEF mission ruined, etc.), it became more and more depressing.

For me (right or wrong), it has never been a big deal to lose lives in a dangerous endevor. That people died in Challanger, or on the beaches of Normandy is certainly regrettable. But it does not compare to the potential loss of WWII or of the space program.
