I was on a business trip, in a part of Texas too far for broadcast TV to reach. I heard the news in the middle of the day, by word of mouth from a local. I was stunned speechless.
I drove, as planned, back to Houston that evening to stay overnight and catch a plane home the next morning. The entire city was in mourning - as you might expect, from their long association with the manned space program. I almost took the rental car down to Johnson Space Center to join the vigil at the gate - and wish ever after that I had.
When I finaly tired of watching the local news - the crews looked and sounded as if they'd been on the air since before the launch - I switched to the radio, and found a classical station. The last piece they played before signing off, dedicated to the Challenger astronauts, was Aaron Copeland's "Fanfare for the Common Man". I cannot hear that piece without thinking of that night.
