re: School Project:What do you remember....

I was in the 5th grade. I walked in to my reading class and the teacher had a tv on and he and some students were quietly gathered around it. Joining them, I realized they were watching the Christie Mccauliff launch. I didn't comprehend the explosion till I had seen it a couple of times. Having been a space nut since the time I watched the first Shuttle launch on TV, I knew something was wrong, but it didn't make sense. This was the first such tragedy I had ever been exposed to. The picture of the explosion is as clear in my mind as it was all those years ago. The whole day was a shock. I cried a little at school and a lot when I got home. The TV was on constantly showing the Challenger blow up again and again and again. For weeks afterward we kept the flag at half mast at the school. I was one of the kids assigned to raise it in the mornings. The day they told us to put it back to full mast was bitter-sweet. I remember feeling glad to move on, but was still mourning inside.
