I was in my grad school lab when my wife called me. I was sure she didn't know what she was talking about since she is not a space fan. After several rounds of trying to get the story "straight", I decided I needed to go home and listen to the news myself. I was devastated when I saw the pictures. I was certain the crew was lost.
As others said the emotianal impact was similar to the moment when the first trade center collapsed. It was a little different because far more lives were lost in the trade center, but they were not people I knew anything about. The far future seemed more threatened after challenger. I was afraid the human space program would be abandoned and all the good that could come from it. The trade center attacks were more threatening near term, but I was confident we would eventually win that battle.

Mark
