I came back in a hurry from the office at 05:00 PM CET only to see that the Shuttle had been delayed because of the cold weather.
I read Sagan's book "Comet" and was listening to the radio (Europe1) when a newsflash announced a terrible tragedy on the US eastcoast (I suspected something about the Shuttle and it was confirmed a few seconds later) and I rushed to the TV set and had to wait until 05:50 for the first pictures (ARD German channel) and one after the other , the other channels interrupted their programs. We didn't have CNN at the time.
The presence of the teacher made it particularly emotional.
