Somehow I skimmed right over the "North America" part. When I read about Columbus, I recall that his first continental discovery was of South America, so I automatically included all of his discoveries in my tally.
My bad.
So I will need to revise my colonial powers list to exclude Portugal, but I forgot to include the Netherlands and Sweden the first time, so that raises the list to five colonial powers, and possibly six, depending on the behavior of Russia in Alaska.
It's still stupid to blame a 228-year-old nation for acts committed over a 512-year period in a geographic area that encompasses twice that nation's territory at its greatest extent.
And I still think I need to read something closer to the original, rather than a summary of a summary of something that was translated at least once and possibly twice.
