Breaking the story

The DOD broke the story in a press release back in March. It was reported in the Washington Post the day after (you have to pay to see the article.) I assume other news outlets also picked it up.

It is an issue now because there are pictures, and with pictures the story is now suitable as a political weapon. That's pretty much all there is to it.
