As long as you didn't cross Saddam, his henchmen, or two crazed sons-Uday and Qusay you could conduct your business pretty much as you pleased and lead a normal life with your family and friends.

Kids were taken out of school and never to be seen again.
I guess they must have crossed him while trying to lead a normal childhood.
