Unconventional Wisdow

An attack might give Kerry a short bounce in the polls because such an attack might temporarily reinforce Kerry's "the ROW hates Bush not America" theme.

But that would be very difficult position for Kerry to maintain (as his primary selling point) unless the attacks continue for several months straight through the election. (Because at some point the majoprity voters would realize that the terrorists are attacking/killing Americans and not Bush...

I think this is probably what happened in Spain: The attack happening so close to the election that it caused a knee-jerk reation that played perfectly into the hands of the challenging party (and ultimatly the terrorists). I don't think the challenging party had anything to do with their success other than that they inadvertaintly had ran a campaign that had set themselves up as the anti-American/anti-Bush alternative.

The ironic thing is that the Spanish attacks will eventually bring the new Spanish government to a more solid anti-terrorist platform (despite their previous campaign's platform). The voters will push them to a stronger position as the reality of the attacks set in.
