Thanks for the voice of reason Frank.

If you see Tom's and EB's posts below you're a fucking heritic for even mentioning such possible scenarios. It's a horrendous thought always to think of the carnage that any kind of warfare can produce. The outcomes both you and I saw as possible contain a huge amount of moral outrage that would have to be bottled up in order for them to go forth. But to somehow believe that there's this clear outcome for any deliberate action when you're dealing with humans is sadly delusional.

I can't even say for certainty what our world would be like today if Hitler had succeeded in his conquest of Europe or where we'd be today if the atomic bombs weren't dropped on Japan. Every tiny ripple in the pond creates unimaginable circumstances years down the pike. I would hope our country always strives for ethical choices when faced with global uncertainty but I also hope that we not be short-sighted about it.

My favorite science fiction series of all times is the Foundation Trilogy which tells exactly of the use of intelligent analysis of human behavior to craft a future thousands of years away. The characters in that series were willing to endure centuries of unrest and horror to ensure a future outcome that hinged on tiny and seemingly mundane events. We could learn well from that mindset.
