It's worth remembering that in those books, psychohistory fell on its face when a tyrannical conqueror rose unexpectedly.

Frank: "We could have ceded the Middle East to him in exchange for suppression of Islamic radicals and oil concessions."

I suppose we could have.

And when the inevitable confrontation came, over holding the oil hostage or whatever, what choices would we have left when Saddam ruled the Middle East with nuclear weapons?
