re: Sweeping aside nobility
The National Right To Vote Campaign, which most of the story is concerned with, is described here as:
...a collaboration with seven other organizations -- ACLU, the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law, MALDEF, NAACP, NAACP Legal Defense Fund, People for the American Way, and The Sentencing Project. The national campaign is focusing on five states -- Alabama, Florida, Maryland, New York, and Texas.
If you can describe either those groups or their choice of targeted states as "non-partisan" without your head exploding, go for it.
