Here in Florida it is the governmental position to deny former inmates from ever having their civil rights restored. Every possible impediment is placed in a former inmates path.
Annually we have about 15,000 inmates that EOS and only 1,200 will be successfuly in getting their rights restored.
It is interesting that Republicans so fear this population that they perpetuate a proceedure that requires a former inmate (that has fully paid his debt to society)to travel to Tallahassee, appear before the Republican cabinet and the Republican governor and plead why he should no longer be denied his civil rights.
Not very many are going to be able to do this, can afford to do this, or can comprehend the intricies of the paper work needed to do this.
The Democratic party must have a powerful draw that Republicans so fear the disadvantaged in society would join them if franchised. Why do the Republicans have such little appear to people who have been "in the system"?
No, I don't think it is an official position for the State of Florida to use every means possible to prevent ex-felons from regaining their civil rights. But I do note the coincidence of a Republican governor, cabinet and Republican controlled legislature.
