The idea is not to allow someone to walk off with the receipt, but to drop the paper printout into a normal, locked and certified ballot box. In case of a problem with the electronic vote, a recount of the paper ballots is a backup procedure. If enough people are happy with the electronic vote, the paper ballots are archived securely for future reference in the same manner that such ballots are stored now.
I see this as a no-brainer, and can't figure out why electronic voting machines can't be so equipped. The printout could even have an optically-readable mark as part of it, to make recounts easier.
As for the rest, pray it isn't close. Some political groups have always seen elections as obstacles, not exercises of the will of the people.
