That's an interesting idea...

Kind of another take on the "Starship Troopers" society. National ID photo cards are optional, but states can pass laws requiring them (or another equally-good ID) to vote.

If such ID cards had an additional, also optional, security check thrown in (maybe a specially-colored card) you'd get an express line at the airport check in, and employment people would smile more quickly.

Libertarians and others who don't like such things would have the choice of opting out. No legal penalties (very important), just more time and inconvenience.

I'm not sure any more that ID privacy is a hill I'm willing to die on these days. I had my fingerprints taken in college to work at the Post Office. Required. Also for a security clearance.

I'm well aware that using my ATM card leaves a trail, as well as my gas credit cards, my grocery store discount card, and my credit cards. My social security number is all over the place. You can't do squat without it.
