re: The 'faithful'

The flaw in a lot of these arguments is the assumption that omnipotence means God actually will do something about everything. Most sophisticated clergy do not subscribe to the theory that God "causes" everything to happen, or even that He "lets" disasters occur.

The same applies to those people rescued from disaster. I don't think God arbitrarily reaches down and "fixes" things for selected people. Maybe He provides courage, and comfort. Or even inspiration.

Free will, the entire basis of the concept of choice between good and evil, doesn't mean a lot if the thumbs are on the scales one way or the other. At some point, the father has to take his hands off the bicycle if the child is ever going to learn to ride.

It's said that God watches each sparrow fall. You'll notice the Bible says nothing about Him catching them.
