I really dont care what you believe, we all end up as dirt in the end..... Your only contribution is what you do for the future- some will be remembered as long as humanity endures- that really is true immortality- Einstein achieved that and a few others did too...
I will admit that the origin of all this chaos and order may never be known- we keep trying and if there is a creator, then those that devote their lives to understanding gods creation must be the 'priests'....
If I am wrong I will see you in hell, that isnt a concept that really worries me- we are just animals that can reason- nothing more, nothing less- we reason badly often, but I really think we will make it-
I really hope that long after I am dirt a human will be on a planet orbiting an alien star, and that the human stops and thinks about all the generations before, those that made it possible.... :) in the end that is the best we can hope for...
he or she will most likely be our decendant, or at least a relative- this really is the only legacy that matters...
Look at cave paintings- that was the epitome of our 'science' at the time- those people lived awful lives according to our standards... I like to imagine we are all living to justify their sacrifice... You can be sure that one of those crude painters was an ancestor to you- You owe them a lot
We really owe it to our ancestors to make this work- if we fail then millions of years of sacrifice was all for nothing- there will be no hell if we fail, there will just be an incredible waste....
I really wish others had the same 'crazy' attitude
