Current Events » in reply to Seriously, why do idiots really rise to the top?

Seriously, because we don't make a serious effort to stop them.

Seriously, because people with the big portfolios belong to a lot of the same clubs and stick together. Seriously, because the small holders don't organize for clout and investigate the candidates and the proposals when they have the opportunity to vote for board members, etc. When they bother to vote, that is.

Seriously, because we believe that people who complain about poor business practices are crybabies and finks.

Seriously, because we believe that suffering makes us good, so it's best to suffer at work. The easiest way to do that is to throw your life away for a stupid boss.

Seriously, because we believe that ambition equals virtue and intelligence. The three can co-exist, but it's not a common combination, and generally, virtue has to come first.

Seriously, because a large pot of money will always attract a certain number of larcenous toads. They aren't stupid in the conventional sense, only in the sense that they don't care about killing the goose as long as they walk away with the most golden eggs.

I'm lucky: for all but two years of my professional life, I've had bosses who have valued the people who they supervise. Money has been tight, and the resulting level of service we can give has been frustratingly limited, but it still has been a wonderful ride.
