Why I am self-employed

Because I can be.

I can work at home, be there for my family, and set my own hours.

I have worked for small companies and large corporations (3M), and been self-employed doing other things besides aerospace design.

When I was younger, I did factory work and field work (only one summer, thank goodness). I've worked at libraries, the Post Office ("there's always work at the Post Office"), and did one summer keying data for an environmental project in Minnesota. I worked for Foxjet before they folded up. I've worked for job shops, and punched time cards.

I've started companies, and seen them fail. And then gone on to start new ones (a lot of the other jobs were "between startups.")

I've been well-off, and I've been really broke. Doing a lot better this year than I was last year. The year before was pretty good. That's life.

I'm contracted to such a new company now, not directly to the government. Somebody else does the paperwork, and I like it that way.

I'm 51 years old, and I have not been living in a cocoon. I've worked with all levels of worker, and been in factories and cubicles as well as boardrooms.

Any more questions?

I suspect that most of the Left's antagonism towards the successful is raw envy. It delights them to think that the rich and successful are only that way because they cheated the system somehow. I'm sure that a lot of losers out there mollify themselves this way.

You're no loser, Mary Anne. Why the bee in the bonnet on this?
