How about the give-me-clean-water-even-though-I'm-poor-because-I'm-human mentality?

Has it escaped your attention that many people who stayed in New Orleans did so because they had no way out? Well, of course it hasn't, because we keep telling you. It's beyond your imagination that people without cars can be worthwhile because they're human. Many of them -surprise!- even had jobs, though they weren't high-paying enough to support a car, its maintenance, fuel and insurance. Poverty is a crime, and its punishment is death.

And speaking of people with jobs: those who were employed at hospitals, including the maintenance staff, were required to stay in town on the job with the patients. Hospitals ran out of supplies too, and would have been fine if someone had gotten them more stuff. But, you know, those people who worked at hospitals were too stupid to abandon their posts and leave town. Unlike those smart people who did take care of themselves and left the old and sick in that nursing home to die.

You see, that's where the "every man for himself" philosophy, put into practice, gets us.
