The short version of the Left's attitude toward this war is that they honestly don't want Saddam, the Baathists, or the terrorists to win, but they do want us to lose. That this is impossible doesn't bother them much.
Liberals are highly allergic to binary ideas, so they have a lot of trouble with the concept that not taking Saddam out of power would mean that he would be in power in Iraq right now.
We know the consequences of the current course of action. An honest anti-war person would admit that his course of action would also have consequences. Those who say that "somehow" Saddam could have been removed from power without violence are living in a fantasy world.
Again, those who believe we should never have gone to war against Saddam (a leader with a proven record of WMD use, proven ambition to develop more, invasion of neighboring countries, support of terrorism, and destruction of his own people and nation), may have a valid point, but when balancing the issues they have to include the results of their alternative, too, which would have been the status quo in Iraq.
If you aren't going to pull a difficult weed out of your flowerbed, you might not be "pro-weed," but you are by default supporting it staying in your garden.
