Reel to reels, cassettes & 8-tracks

I remember when they were the cutting edge in home audio equipment. I also remember when cassettes came out. They were a big improvement over 8-tracks. Speaking of 8-tracks, do you know who invented them and why they were considered so significant (technically) for a short time?
