The "uproar" is coming solely from the press. Most of the public probably doesn't give a rat's ass about this issue. There were about thirty similar accidents in Texas in 2004 alone.

The media's fury about this stems from their belief that the world revolves around them, as well as the constant frustration at being unable to gin up yet another artificial crisis.
