re: *Nick, why do you feel this is off topic?

I think it might have originally been a 50:50 call between CE and space. Sure it discusses technology, but only in the sense of "what bomb do we use, and what would be its effects". The obvious political slant of the original movie link makes it a clear political post, and hence CE, imho.

But, if a thread is initially on topic, and has other on topic branches I don't feel I can move it because one branch becomes political... It isnt a matter of what I WANT to do... it is a matter of what I feel I CAN do... The link to the animation was on topic in my opinion- I didnt think it could be considered as political... (I just watched it again)....

Once the swearing and the catfight started, then it should have been a no-brainer to move it off Space Science - our flagship board. I suspect Flame is the best place for it, given the language - it's more acceptable there.

I will think about this point, Nick, but I am tired now... I try not to make decisions when I am tired....

The foul language was unfortunate... however I do not consider calling someone an idiot grounds for moving a thread to flame... You and I both have been to scientific conferences... I think you would agree that the criticism at such conferences, while maybe more civil in language, can be FAR harsher in tone.... At one conference I saw one poor guy get told, politely, by several professors, that he really had no idea what he was talking about and perhaps he should consider a different vocation... (Translation... "you are an idiot")

I gave one presentation at a conference where I was SEVERELY grilled (I was a grad student presenting data that contradicted some professors pet theories)- luckily, I had the facts on my side... but when I was done I was shaking from the stress.

(At another practice presentation as a student, not at a conference thank god, I wasnt so lucky, I mis-understood a key point in one experiment... as luck would have it I had a professor raise his hand and proceed to explain that he worked on that experiment as part of his graduate work and that I had the issue completely wrong- it was FAR more painful than if he had called me an idiot)

Sometimes, people make idiotic claims... I think it is fair to point this out... sometimes I think it is fair to point this out rather harshly.

So, Nick, if I do move it where does the thread go? (Remember, by taking action I have to also deal with the fact that I am creating precedent) ....
