That was detonated at 1,500 feet in the air, at Eniwetok Atoll. Just to keep things straight.

Do you think that makes a difference with 500 kT, or a megaton? 20-30 yards underground will certainly couple more of the energy to the ground, but the fire ball would be huge and the fallout would be terrible...
