Selling out

A serious difference between my neighborhood and Hercules is that Walmart doesn't actually own the land yet. It's zoned commercial, but is being farmed.

Part of the local issue had to do at first with the holders of some of the local land that Walmart wants to build on. It was granted to a medical group -- local doctors all -- who had a family practice facility on an adjacent parcel. They were going to sell it to Walmart for the income, and the local people had a fit! The medical group were given that land solely with the intent that they use it to expand the facility in the future, and that was explicitly stated in the grant. They were unable to justify selling their granted land to Walmart as a way to expand their medical practice. So that round went to the community.

Also, the medical practice has since added an imaging facility, a mental health clinic, and a pharmacy. I'd love to know the story behind that one. I suspect that they received, along with a good public chewing-out, a privately-given check for the improvements, and that the combination was enough to make Walmart a less attractive neighbor.

This will not help Walmart's case. (They're ba-aaack!) They will be attempting to counter all the previous arguments, none of which conditions have changed, plus propose building right next to a (now) serious local waystation to stabilize medical emergencies on the way to a hospital, as well as a large family practice center. You would think they would look somewhere else. But no... It makes me wonder why winning should be that important to them. Is it about an overall strategy to dominate the region economically? Is it about teaching people they can't oppose Walmart? It surely isn't about love for the community.
