Forgive Tom, he is an engineer. He rails about "THE government" and fails to realize there are an estimated 83,000 governments or bodies with quasi-governmental powers in this nation. We call them cities, states, counties, special taxing districts, etc. Many of these have the power of eminent domain and following their jurisdictional regulations, establish need, prove general benefit can pay fair market value estimated in terms of money and acquire the land.
Sorry, Tom. There is nothing subversive about this process and was used in the 1780's to open the Boston Post Road.
All of these condemnation empowered bodies have one thing in common. The are elected, or appointed by elected officials that are local. If you don't like what they do-take action and vote them out. They are your neighbors, not the enemy way away in Washington.
