I knew you would bring that up.

And, for what it's worth, now that we have some medical experience and some sociological statistics about abortion in the nation as a whole because it's been legal for so many years, maybe it's time for a state-to-state fight for laws that support it specifically, rather than to lean on an increasingly fragile court decision.

Women would then know precisely where they would have to live to be considered adults responsible enough to make serious decisions about their health and their reproductive activity. That in itself might produce very interesting demographic patterns in about 20 years.

Do you want to include allowing states to forbid women to cross state lines in order to have abortions? I guarantee you that those would wind up in the Supreme Court in no time.

Before, if you recall, abortion, except for the most extreme of medical reasons (the touted "rape and incest" provision not being one of them), was absolutely outlawed, but if you were rich enough, you could get a safe medical abortion offshore. If you were desperate enough, you could get maimed or worse.

It would give everybody an opportunity to discuss the right to be left alone, too, upon which the abortion ruling is based. And wouldn't that be an interesting discussion to have, what with the government so interested in people's private lives these days?
