There's no doubt that Bush is a conservative, and certainly not the compassionate kind. He oozes dislike of democracy, from his disdainful treatment of the press to his blithe willingness to violate the Constitution at the drop of a hat and his attitude that any Americans who don't like it can pound sand. There's a man who doesn't understand that he's president of all the people of a democracy.
You can see it strongly also in Congressional Republicans. Their attitude is that America's a democracy only one day out of every two years, and between times they're running an absolute dictatorship. Cutting Democrats completely out of the legislative process is, again, the mark of people who just don't understand democracy. A small-d democrat understands that democracy's a process of continual compromise, never a winner-takes-all putsch.
As always, though, I'm optimistic that our system is stronger than the antidemocratic ambitions of NeoRepublicans. I really believe that, behind the visible structures of government the Founders designed, there's an informal social structure that acts as a backup to the formal checks-and-balances, and which eventually swings into action to expel those who try to evade the checks and undermine the American system. Republicans can game the system and push the law all they want, but eventually the people will get disgusted and throw them out.
