"Find yourself a Marxist BB where you can find people who REALLY have contrasting views and get it out of your system and then come back here and relax and talk about art and science and philosophy and anything else that's going on. Because right now, not much else is happening here but politics, and its really starting to become a crashing bore."
I suspect that Tom already spends a fair amount time on various Marxist BBs- he's made numerous references to this. So perhaps what you find objectable is a "habit" he has developed from doing this.
I would suggest the opposite, Tom should spend less time at Marxist BBs [dem underground].
Now, personally I was mulling over and almost made post a couple of times arguing for a socialistic solution to problem off shore oil drilling, but it seems that law makers have already beat me to it- though my ideas in this regard probably would been too unwieldly. Anyhow I think there is little doubt that Capitalism is surest way to lift the world out of poverty, and we are taxed far too much. But I think socialistic solutions could work and may hold their greatest value to make something politically possible. I also think socialism works in regard to "nation building". Though I think too much focus on socialism type systems and not enough encouragement for capitialism will cause any nation building effort to evenually fail.
Regarding the general topic, I found this somewhat interesting:
Anarchy in Somalia
"The answer to that question is one that causes you to “recheck your assumptions.” The biggest fear in Somalia is that the weak-to-invisible government in Mogadishu will become a real government with actual powers. That fear is the source of all the violence.
Somalia has not done too badly for itself without a centralized government. Compared to other African countries that have fallen under control of despotic tyrants, or who operate as socialist democracies as well those who struggle under the dictates of the UN, IMF or World Bank, it has actually done quite well. The future of peace and prosperity there may actually depend on preventing a central government from forming despite all the enthusiasm for that idea from such statist organizations such as the UN and the EU."
and:
"By the time you finish what van Notten writes, you might just start thinking the Somali model of government actually offers the most freedom of any today. As I said, this article flies in the face of everything you have ever been indoctrinated taught about the forms of government. So as you start reading it, you really do need to check your assumptions “at the door.” But my caution remains, a system of anarchy can work in a tribal/clan focused society such as in Somalia, but not those that are not."

And much more to it.
One thing it remind of is ideas I've had for quite while about offer areas of land that people could live not in the modern world. And specifically regarding Somalia it's possible it could "used" in some fashion as a way to reach peace agreement with the terrorists.
