Hi, Robert. I was going to include your rebuttal with my original post, but it slipped out of my grasp, what with all the different computers I've had since the old days.
Your visualization is an interesting interpretation; however, I don't think the image warrants it. The one I've posted is selectively cropped, to be sure, however the original (here) appears to show very active and energetic venting, not shadows and rectangular blocks.
Given all the other pictures from the same general region that show plenty of evidence of previous venting, if not the activity itself, but no blocks of any kind that would produce the shadows you see, maybe this image really is of the extraordinary geysering referenced above. Especially since the illustration for the story seems to be an attempt at a ground level view of the gushers in the orbiter image.
Of course "gushers" brings up Dan Spires' sort-of wish (in the long ago) that oil or something similar might be found on Mars. Looks unlikely to be sure, but ya never know.
What's kind of strange to me is that the geysers are said to be linked to the "trees" and "shrubbery" formations, and the "spiders".
There look to be more of the geyser-like formations in dune fields and on relatively flat ground away from the "spiders" and such -- at least in my limited observations.
