from the heart

Thanks, Lindy. I had a few things to get off my chest when I wrote that, and I felt like I was expressing years of outrage and frustration about what these NeoRepublicans are doing to America.

That book by John Dean, "Conservatives Without Conscience", was really illuminating, because Dean's a Conservative himself, but he represents the old-school, the honorable Conservatives...the ones that the radicals today dismiss as "paleoconservatives". It was Dean's analysis I was referring to when I described the whackjobs as "authoritarian conservatives". I wish I could get our local Wingers to read it, to hear from one of their own about where they've gone wrong. Like Tom...I remember once upon a time when Tom was one of the classic Conservatives, truer to his Libertarian ideals, but then came 9/11, and five years of fearmongering from the people he trusted as his leaders. Now he's mostly foaming at the mouth, or ocassionally, as in the "Will" post, expressing his insecurity and saying in so many words that democracy can't cut the mustard and we need strong and ruthless leadership. Tom's become the classic authoritarian conservative.

To be honest, I don't know what to make of the stories of drug smuggling and CIA connections and all that. But what I do know is that the farther we go toward authoritarianism, the more rights we give up and the more we just shrug each time we learn of another attack on the Constitutation by Republicans, the more we accept government secrecy, then the easier it is for evil to thrive in the shadows, and for it to turn out that there really are conspiracies slithering in the walls of government.
