A minor point on this thread and others is that I'm seen as making headway with the discussion of authoritarian conservatism. But to me it seems incomplete, because mostly I've been debating the subject with people who seem to be exhibiting a lot of AC, and getting the expected knee-jerk denial. But integral to the idea is that it's a distinct type of conservatism, and not all Conservatives are of the authoritarian persuasion.
I perceive you as more the Classic Conservative type, Frank, along with several others. RNE impressed me over on Geek with an expression of opinion on civil liberties that was a refreshing blast from the past, from the days when you could expect a Conservative to be skeptical of government and private power, and concerned about the place of the individual in our society.
I'd really like to hear from you and the other Classics what you think of the notion of authoritarian conservative. What's it like to be a "paleoconservative" in a world dominated by flaming radicals?
