Boy, normally I don't disagree with your ideas but it sounds like the Rodney King side of you coming out. ("Why can't we all just get along?") The problem is see in all this is that the other extreme has too much of a greedy and paranoid side to them. They won't be content to stay in their little Paradise. They'll want to take over the neighboring one.
It sounds to me like wishful thinking is a larger component here than an analysis of history. Splitting things up will split up more than just ideologies. It will also divide natural resources, transportation hubs, centers of commerce. Even though Katrina took out a huge geographical region with its winds, the US is big enough to absorb tremendous disaster and rebound quickly. When agriculture takes a hit, our industrial production helps to ease that and vice versa. You start segmenting the country and any downfall can doom a region and turn them towards anarchy.
If I didn't know better I'd think you were trolling a bit here.
Oh and by the way. I don't want to live in fucking California no matter how progressive you might be. Besides, I can't return. I've decided never to pay West Hollywood that parking ticket so I'm sure I'll eventually have a warrant out for my arrest. I've heard the Govenator's dungeons are horrid places.
