Two Jewels

This irrational wish for freedom
glitters like a crimson jewel,
its radiance suffuses the festival
of silence; I should be grateful
to be able to imagine it.
2.
Does it seem irrational
that the jewel of freedom,
for which we profess to be so grateful
when we bring it out to glitter
at certain festival times,
whose radiance we wish the world to share,
floats on a crimson sea of blood
and the silence of the grave?
