I just want "timeout" to be an easier deal. There are times when I bring up a topic that means something to me that I'd like to discuss as an adult with others and not be slammed by partisan crap within 5 minutes of posting.
Part of the problem in forums is that when you get these people that have to jump on the topic you post rapidly, it doesn't allow others to fully digest the point that you're trying to get across. They tend to see the last response and nothing else. By the time someone you really want to talk to finally adds their two cents, the focus has been shifted to partisan debate on this wide range of issues instead of the narrow focus you brought up.
Now there are certainly times when I'm spoiling for a fight myself but I think I make it abundantly clear in the way I create the post.
In essence then maybe what I truly need is not a personal filter but instead a filter on a post I create where one can choose the participants they want to let in. I'd only use it sparingly but having it would be a wonderful option. Maybe that's just a pipe dream if I truly want to be a forum participant but it may be the only way to create productive debate again. Something has to change here or it simply won't be worth it on some topics.
