Arizona Republic was sold in 2000...it's liberal now...

...and any conservatism is a shell/facade left for the residents who aren't paying attention and would unsubscribe in a minute if they knew who owned it - the Gannett company (the same co that churns out "USA Today" echhh!)

Their letters to the editor are almost always now anti-war, anti-Bush stuff and they are now de facto champions of illegal immigration.

The old Arizona Republic would never print the sort of tripe it does these days in its opinion, arts and business sections. Fortunately, after reading the LA Times for years, even the leftist version of the AZ Republic still seems fairly tame. Give Gannett another few years to hit their stride and get rid of anything resembling conservatism. They've already cut all meaty conservative content for leftist-filler columnists and Arts & Leisure is now just chock-full of cotton candy pieces on "Arizona's cultural diversity".

The truth is, conservatives now get more news off the internet. "Old world" newspapers cater to poorer demographics that don't have/can't afford VDSL or cable hook ups. Unfortunately, you can't sell the Republic and make a profit if your only customers come out of southern and west Phoenix. Gannett has a small empire of holdings so they can suffer low sales for awhile and try to prop the Republic with an emphasis on revenues from classified ads, etcetera.

But the AZ Republic a conservative paper? Not anymore!
