Lindy, I would hope we haven't sunk that low. What would keep me from believing something like that would be the choice of targets. The impact of a columnist or an ex-politician would be minimal compared with targeting a Senator or representative. In the Senate, if you wished to use assassination to further your political cause, you could wipe out a Democratic one in a state where a Republican governor gets to choose their successor and restore Republican control. (I'm not saying the recent event that resembles that was anything more than coincidence)

Or, you'd take out a liberal Supreme Court justice knowing you could replace them with a ringer.

If they're going after Molly Ivins over those choices the only motive would be for simple revenge or intimidation (which only works if people know you did it), hardly worth the price if you get caught.
