In Canada, the catholic schools are the only religious schools that are publicly funded, aside from secular public schools - I think. But I've always wondered: why send kids there instead of a regular school? What's to be gained by it? It's wierd.
I also insist on separation of church and state. Knowing history, that early in the colonization of the east coast, catholic leaders denied people of scottish descent, whom they called 'infidels', access to the courts. They denied people justice who were not of the same religion as they. And look at the fanatics are doing in the middle east, trying to expand their ideology westward, royally fucking up everything in their path. I think any political leader in Canada who tries to re-combine church and state is 'going down', as the saying goes.
