I don't know about the rest of Canada, but in BC pretty much all private schools, religious or not, are elegible for partial government funding as long as they meet certain criteria. I guess the reasoning is that such schools take some pressure off the public school system, and funding them at 50% or 35% is cheaper than forcing all schools to be public and the govt having to pay full price for all students. 95% of the private schools fell into the 50% or 35% groups, 5% were not govt funded.
As of the 2004/2005 school year, 10% of the K-12 students in BC were in private schools - of these, about 30% were Catholic, 24% identified themselves as "Christian", 15% were elite "rich folks" schools and hte remaining 31% a mixture of "First Nations, parochial Christian Church Schools, Jewish, Mennonite, Montessori, Muslim, Seventh-day Adventist, Secular, Sikh, Special Education, Waldorf, etc."
