A firearm is an inanimate object. It has no effect on a person whatsoever. It's just a tool. Alcohol and dope are mind altering substances. The car in a drunk driving incident doesn't kill, the intoxicated mind driving it does.
As far as banning alcohol, sure it can be made out of grapes and barley, but meth is made from cough medicine and common house hold chemicals. All because it's easy to make doesn't mean we shouldn't make it illegal and go after those who make it.
Alcohol is different in that it has a very deep pervasiveness and very long cultural history in world society. I would still like to see it outlawed though. Marijuana doesn't have nearly as deep cultural roots as alcohol, and we shouldn't give it a chance to take root by turning a blind eye towards it. This one of those hard things you mentioned before that's worth doing.
