ER has an excellent point

For what it would take to effectively colonize another star system, you could fill our own solar system with O'Neill colonies or asteroid colonies. If you are going to develop the tech to make an alien world livable, why not start with Mars? There is a LOT of room in our solar system for people who scorn gravity wells.

I would hope that giant space telescopes and laser-driven sail probes would give us more information to work with at that point in the future, and maybe colonization would be something people would think about. A civilization that had already spent a few generations in an O'Neill or asteroid colony might not think much of a couple of hundred years between stars in a similar enclosure.

Does everyone realize that you can colonize almost ANY reasonably benign star with O'Neill colonies?

The universe may eventually belong to humans who don't live on planets any more.
