Customs

One study I've found fascinating is the cultural mores of different societies. How they deal with "marriage" (coupling) and pro-creation.

There have been some interesting stories where all marriages are arranged, and how just one couple falling in love outside of the marriage upsets the apple cart and places taboos and trouble on them. Yet, they won't be daunted. In western societies, too much emphasis is based on rules related to ceremony.
When this sours, it turns into acrimony and the divorce lawyers feed off of broken rules and broken dreams. I think they should teach parenting and marriage in schools to give young adults the framework for the responsibilities. And all couples should have to watch at least 6 hours of divorce court before they get their marriage license. Might slow them down a bit.

And I think you're right as to how rules evolve out of religion. Order is bound to come to any society. We are all natural organizers anyway.
